BREED ORIGINS
The precise ancestry of the Bolognese is something of a mytery. Its closet relative within the Bichon group is the Maltese, but it is unclear whether the Maltese is its direct ancestor or decendant. The Bolognese's origins date back to around A.D. 1000, with the breed then evolving in the Italian city of Bologna, from which its name is derived. The Medici family in Italy gave these dogs as gifts to obtain favors and many European rulers fell under their charm. Part of the Bolognese's undoubted appeal, aside from its attractive appearance, is the very strong bond of these dogs form their owners.
ONLY WHITE While toda, only white examples of the Bolognese are known, both black and piebald examples wre recorded at an earlier stage in its history.
