As much terrier as toy, this breed is similar in appearance to the Yorkshire Terrier, but not quite so diminutive. Although created as a companion breed, it is more than capable of despatching small vermin, and quite feisty when it comes to declaring and defending it's interests.
BREED ORIGINS
Although the Australian Silky Terrier only appeared at the turn of the 20Th century, it's origins are not clearly known. It's probably a cross of the Australian terrier and the Yorkshire Terrier, possibly with some Skye Terrier thrown in. It can be territorial and independent, so early socialization and obedience training are essential. Given these, this lively and inquisitive breed makes a cheering companion.
STRICTLY DECORATIVE The long coat is fine and silky, and matts easily, so does require daily grooming. Despite it's length, it is not insulating, because it lacks and under coat, so this is warm weather breed.
