SETTING THE STANDARD
The ideal example of each breeds encapsulated in the breed standard, which is laid down by the registration body, such as kennel club (KC) in the United Kingdom, or the Federation of Cynologuique Internationale (FCI) in mainland Europe. The situation is more confused in the United States since there are a number of separate registration bodies, of which the known is the American Kennel Club. The standard is an attempt to portray in words a description of what the breed should look like, in all respects, including coloration. SHOWING THE SAME BREED Depending on the size of the show, there will be various classes within each actual breed division, such as classes for puppies, or for older, "veteran" dogs.
DESIGNER DOGS
A popular growing trend in dog breeding is what are now being called "designer dogs" the result of crosses between existing purebreds with the aim of capturing the most desirable traits of both parents. Designer dogs may represent a new breed category for show purposes in the future. Although this time of breeding has a novelty value, it is imply a continuation of the same trend that has taken place since the very start of the domestication of the dog. Breeders creating true designer dogs are usually aiming to refine the personalities and characteristics of these dogs so as to make them better companions, which is the main role of the dog today. Quiet, cute, small, and trainable are just some of the characteristics that are usually flavored. the range of designer dos continues to increase, with over 75 such crosses having been named to date. The trend is hoe firmly established to combine parts of the name of both ancestral breeds in that of the designer dog. Hence labradoodle, reflecting a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, a Cook-apoo, which is the result of a Cocker Spaniel-Poodle ancestry, or a Puggle, a cross between a Pug and a Beagle. Poodles have played the most signifigant role so far in the ancestry of designer dogs, partly because they do not shed fur, so seem to be less likely to trigger an allergic reaction in people who are sensitive. This hypoallergenic aspect can be critical especially for disabled people, who may otherwise be deprived of canine assistance. In fact, Labradoodles-currently the best known of the designer dogs-were originally created for this reason to aid those with impaired sight. LABRADOODLE The general aim with crosses of this type is to create a dog with a fairly individual appearance, while selecting for desirable traits and behavior. PUGGLE The increasingly popular Puggle is a designer crossbreed created by crossing the Pug and the Beagle. the result is a good-natured, active, and playful companion breed with a distinctive and endearing expression.
