The smallest breed in the world, the distinctive-looking Chihuahua possesses the character and bark of a much lager dog. They are noisy by nature, and have a fearless temperament.
The Chihuahua is named after the province of Mexico where it originated, but it's ancestry remains mysterious. It may be descendant of a range of companion breeds which were kept throughout the Americans in the pre-Colombian era. Others suggest that it's ancestors might have been brought from Spain by the early settlers, and may have interbred with the local dogs to create the bred of today. Chihuahua's first started to attract attention outside Mexico during the 1850's, when they became fashionable companions for wealthy U.S. women, and even today, the breed enjoys celebrity status.
SMOOTH-COATED This is the traditional form of the breed, which is characterized by a domed, apple shaped head. It's ears are positioned at an angle of about 45 degrees to the head.
LONG-COATED The coat is soft, with the hair forming a very evident too on the sides of the face, and on the underpants of the body, with the feathering on the legs. The coat itself lies flat.
